How to Help a Friend with an Eating Disorder

Posted in Mental Health by
Eating Disorders are the most deadly mental illness and the most  As someone who has personally lost years due to an eating disorder, I can vouch for the fact that they are terribly draining and taxing on your body, mind, soul, and that of your family and friends. The prevalence of eating disorders in today’s society is concerning

I spoke with Lauren Smolar, the Director of Programs at the National Eating Disorder Association, about helping a friend that you believe is struggling with an eating disorder. I find this to be very difficult to navigate; it’s hard finding a balance of expressing genuine concern and overstepping any boundaries/triggers.

I hope that this interview brings some clarity to this issue; it certainly did for me!

How to Detoxify Your Body and Why You Should Do It

Posted in Fitness, Food by
You’ve likely heard of the age old and Victoria’s secret model endorsed morning ritual of taking a shot of ACV in the morning in efforts to detoxify the body.
You might be thinking – “why would I willingly do such a thing….. what benefits could possibly come out of this that would outweigh the putrid taste of drinking vinegar first thing in the morning ? I don’t hate myself!”…. To that, I say- fair enough!
This seemingly masochistic task does reap many benefits for the body, but fret not; I have some ways to achieve those same benefits without the torture :).
So WHAT are these benefits I speak of—– Why should you detoxify your body? Our livers already are tasked with detoxifying chemicals, so why should we take extra steps?
Turns out the Standard American Diet (SAD) consisting of over-consuming processed animal products, processed grains,  and artificial ingredients compounded with environmental pollutants and stressors are guilty for overworking our livers. Constant overworking and stressing of the liver causes the organ to lose its efficiency in carrying out essential functions.

5 Negative Thought Patterns Holding You Back

Posted in Mental Health, Self Love by
The original list featured in Dr. Burns The Feeling Good Handbook, which itself was derived from the book Cognitive Therapy: Basics and Beyond by J. Beck and A. Beck, includes 10 negative thought patterns/cognitive errors. These cognitive errors were identified in efforts to increase awareness of common ways that negativity seeps into our minds, and in doing so, prevent it from affecting us.  I shortened the list down to 5, as many of them overlap.

The Most Controversial Quran Verses- Explained

the most controversial quran verses explained

[This is a guest post by the fabulous Khadijah at The Fit Hijabi. In this piece, she clears up the most controversial Qur’an verses (Ayaat) that many people use to prove their (false) belief that Islam is a religion of hatred. This couldn’t be farther from the truth!]

“The Koran clearly states that it contains two types of verses: context-independent verses, and context-dependent verses.

Context-independent verses are unambiguous and timeless principles which can be applied in every situation.

Context-dependent verses are those that are specific to particular situations, and can’t be read in isolation.

The Koran then goes on to condemn those who cherry-pick verses to suit their own selfish ends, and tells its reader to take all the verses together before coming to any conclusions.

“Peace” is one of the literal meanings of Islam, and its ultimate aim. And as such, it explicitly teaches that there is no compulsion in matters of faith.

The Value of Intentions

Posted in Faith, Mindful Lifestyle by
Nobody is immune from making mistakes. We err daily with varying intensities and consequences.  If we were to face the retributions of every mistake we make, we would all be living in Dante’s eighth circle of hell.
I think that many people skeptical of religion envision an angry God who punishes humans for every earthly mistake. There are also many who identify as religious that share a similar image of God. Living in such intense fear can be incredibly inhibitory to one’s life and their relationship with God.
The blind fear I used to possess barred me from truly optimizing the relationship I could have had with God. Liberation from falsities in my perception of Our Creator enhanced my relationship and closeness to Him. I now am confident in the persistent love God gives us, the Mercy He bestows on us, and the Faith He has in us to constantly improve and better ourselves in His Vision.

Though we are and should be held accountable for our actions, God is a loving and merciful Creator who embraces us as flawed.
